How to Identify and Mitigate the 3 Types of Bias in AI for Fairer Outcomes

When we’re talking about bias in AI, there are 3 kinds and 6 places that bias can be an issue.

The three kinds of bias are:

  • Belief (root). This is the root cause of all forms of bias. If you believe, for example, that Koreans are {insert bias here}, then that conditions your thinking and actions
  • Cognitive (process). There are roughly 20+ different kinds of cognitive bias, ways your brain hijacks you, from things like confirmation bias (reinforcing beliefs) to sunk cost fallacy
  • Statistical (outcome). This is the most observable form of bias, where a sample population is statistically different than the population it’s drawn from.

When we talk about bias, we can measure statistical most easily and most objectively. If you’re using an LLM to help vet CVs and your candidate pool is 95% male in a population that’s 50% male, the data skew is obvious.

The challenge then becomes to work backwards from the observed statistical bias. The root of bias – belief – shows up in many different processes, some intentional, some not. And those in turn beget the outcomes that we measure.

When we’re talking about bias in AI, we’re often talking about belief – what kinds of belief have we encoded in the models themselves. But those beliefs have to be expressed as part of the process – the prompting and interaction with the model.

And that’s where you can mitigate bias in AI models. If your process – prompting and interaction – includes clear definitions of what you believe is unacceptable, then the model is quite capable of altering its responses.

Where bias really becomes a problem is when we don’t think to ask the question, of ourselves or of the model. What could go wrong? What bias, implicit or explicit, is in the model’s outputs? How will those biases play out in how the outputs are used?

The first indicator that you’re using AI well to mitigate bias is how often you ask yourself and it what biases exist in the outputs.
