How AI Reads Your Brand: The Mind-Blowing Word Web Behind Every Response

Warning: this content is older than 365 days. It may be out of date and no longer relevant.

Imagine you’ve just walked into a vast public library.

You walk up to the librarian, and you say, “I’d like a word, please.”

“With the manager?”

“No,” you say. “A word from your books. In fact, a word and all the words near it in your books.”

“What word?”

“How about the word Trust?” you say.

Assuming the librarian doesn’t call the police immediately and makes a legitimate attempt to help, they eventually bring back a long, long list of every word near the word “Trust” in every book they have. The word list is practically a book unto itself. There’s no hint of which books the word list came from; it’s all of them in the library.

You smile and say, “Thanks. This is helpful. Can I have another word?”

The librarian rolls their eyes. “Sure, which one?”

“Insights.”

Hours and hours later, the frazzled librarian returns with more words. “Will that be all?” they say, out of breath.

“Well… actually… I was hoping you could also tell me which words from these two word lists overlap, and then which words are related to those overlapping words,” you ask with a sheepish grin.

The police are called moments later.

This is what’s happening at lightning speeds when you prompt an AI model – this and much, much more. It’s why in this past weekend’s newsletter I wrote that doing “brand strength measurement” in AI is a fool’s errand. There’s no way to anticipate all the words and all the conversations that occur in an AI model to even get a sense of when your brand is mentioned – if at all.

Link in the comments if you want to read the whole thing, and thanks @Tom Treanor for your POV on it.
