I need a gear system recommendation!

So here’s the situation. I carry a lot of gear with me on a regular basis, and the current system of various bags and backpacks is both a pain and not efficient. Here’s what I carry with me daily:

  • MacBook Pro
  • MiniDV cam
  • MPEG4 cam
  • DSLR
  • 2 iPods – classic and touch
  • Nokia N91
  • External 750 GB HD
  • Condenser mic
  • M-Audio Microtrack recorder
  • Flashlight
  • Undisclosed ninja stuff that’s small, light, and sharp

Without lugging around a suitcase or having a PA, what systems have you seen that would make carting this pile of kit around more easy? I need your recommendations!

  1. Well for the Smaller stuff, I recommend a Hip Holster, I keep my iPod, Blackberry, and Camera in one. It is very nice having they all easy to grab at any time.

  3. I’ve had good luck shopping at http://www.ebags.com being able to sort by things like bag weight are useful…

  5. With that much stuff, I’d consider one of those backpack like things that also has wheels when you don’t feel like carrying it. Or work with less stuff 🙂 It’s a shame that Apple has never made a tiny laptop like those cute little Sony Vaios. Something like this http://www.luggageguru.com/product.asp?pid=2306 (as an example, not a specific recommendation) might work for that much stuff.

  7. You might consider following in P. Diddy’s footsteps: Hire a man servant to lug all your things around, while holding an umbrella over your head. He could hand you a shuriken whenever you need to deal with an unruly fan or a rabid Chris Brogan trying to turn the event you’re at into an “unconference.”

  9. I have been looking at bags endlessly. “Guy” bags, such as the backpacks designed by timbuk2 are good- they are durable and somewhat customizable, and macho enough. the hard part is finding an appropriate bag that is both functional and somewhat feminine for a 17″ mac book pro, but I finally found one by Jordana Paige, meant for knitting, but carries all the gear and they have a more butch version available. Big, roomy, compartments…. check out the bags available by LL bean as well. I have a backpack that converts to a shoulder bag from them I use while travelling that is extremely durable and has enough compartments to keep gear separate and safe.

  11. Its going to sound weird, but have you looked into a diaper bag? They are usually quite big with lots of compartments. There is a company called Diaper Dude that makes a messenger bag especially for guys.
We carry them at the maternity store on Newbury that I manage if you ever wanted to stop in and check it out.
