Information is inherently free.
Think about it for a second. When someone shares information with you, the transfer of information is intangible. And once it’s in your head, there’s no way for that person to claw it back, to make you forget it.
Learning is inherently free.
Knowledge is inherently free.
Which means in the age of AI, if your product or service is founded on the principle of charging money for information itself, you are deeply imperiled. Anyone with decent AI skills can replicate what you have to offer easily. Your moat is gone. Gatekeepers are gone.
So what can you charge money for? What provides value if the information itself is free? Everything around the information. The service you provide. The relationship you nurture. The actions you take on behalf of the customer. The time and care you take on a task.
For example, I can sit down and build a Deep Research report that is extensive and complete. That information is more or less free. What happens after that data is constructed is where I can add value. I can turn it into a customer persona or a piece of competitive intelligence, pair it with other information, and hand it to a customer to say that not only do we have the information, we know what to do with it.
Information always has been and always will be an ingredient. The age of charging money just for the ingredient instead of what you cook with the ingredient is coming to a close.
AI is the new engine of the car.
Information is the fuel.
You still need the rest of the car, and not only would someone pay for that, they’d also pay to have you drive it.
