Is GPT-4.5 a Waste of Money? The Shocking Truth About AI Costs

GPT-4.5 is everything wrong with AI today.

Here’s why. First, it’s ridiculously expensive for what it is. OpenAI says the costs and prices are because it’s so huge and compute intensive.

When you look at its benchmarks… it kind of sucks.

When you look at its API prices… it really kind of sucks. OpenAI GPT-4.5 – for the same level of performance on many benchmarks as DeepSeek R1 – is 27,000% more expensive. TWENTY SEVEN THOUSAND PERCENT MORE EXPENSIVE. Put another way, DeepSeek is 99.63% less expensive than GPT-4.5.

And when you think about how API prices are a direct correlation of compute consumption – and therefore energy costs. We know from their own publications that o1 and o3 are energy hogs – and GPT-4.5 is 5 times the cost of o1, their highest performing, highest energy consumption production model. It stands to reason GPT-4.5 is probably 5 times as energy intensive.

This is not the way forward, and everyone knows it, whether they’re willing to say the quiet part out loud or not. (And it’s no wonder SamA and company wanted a $500 billion handout from Uncle Sam)

What we’ve seen over the past two months is that there are incredibly efficient ways to make AI work well, from GRPO to FlashMLA to many other very technical terms that basically mean use a bunch of small stuff in concert to deliver better, faster performance. The sum is greater than the parts. With toolkits like Unsloth, even small models like Mistral Small 3 can be turned into reasoning powerhouses at a fraction of the resource cost to operate.

But those ways don’t make it easy for tech companies to earn money. Quite the opposite. They truly democratize AI and cut into the profit margins of big tech.

While I’m glad OpenAI is sunsetting dense models like GPT-4.5, it should be clear that alternate architectures like mixture-of-experts models and reasoning models tuned with GRPO are the sustainable way forward.
