Here's what this means for you. You get a practical framework for separating real human results from inflated machine numbers, so you can make confident decisions about blocking, charging, or welcoming AI crawlers. You'll also learn these concepts: causal inference and uplift modeling as the math that untangles conflated traffic, why user-agent data plus your conversions reveal what AI is really contributing, and how tools like Cloudflare's toll booth change the economics of letting bots visit your site. This is a pretty straightforward analytics question. And it is a very common question being asked everywhere right now, which is what's all this AI stuff doing for us. Here's how I would approach this. You want to take your human traffic, which is identifiable by user agents. You want to take your AI traffic, which is also identifiable by agents, and you want to take that against your business objectives. If you have conversions on your website, you know, uh purchases of some kind. If you're a digital publisher, uh as Simon said, then you know how many people sign up for a paying membership. And you want to do causal inference. Causal inference is a time-honored mathematical technique to determine hey, does this thing correlate with anything that we care about? This is in no way new. This is this is old, old analytics stuff. Does there a relationship between X and Y? And so one of the things you're gonna do now, this is where AI is going to be really helpful to you is determining what that difference is. Um, because if they are conflated, which they might very well be, you have to you have to untangle that. And here's what I mean. When you have traffic that is conflated, you have to do what is called uplift modeling or propensity modeling, where you disambiguate the difference between human-generated traffic and AI-generated traffic. Uh, what would you have gotten from the humans with or without AI? Is the key question that you're trying to answer with statistical uh with data analysis? And this is this discipline is called causal inference modeling. It is something that AI tools are very, very good at. Not generative AI, but classical AI. So we're talking machine learning. We're talking stuff from the 2010s that are well established. But that today's AI tools, today's generative AI tools are exceptionally good at writing that code. They're exceptionally good at writing software for you that will do that analysis for you and understand what happened. So causal inference is what you're looking for. So you'll need different data sets. You'll need fairly granular data to say, okay, here is this set of data. Here is our website traffic, here is our leads, here is our market qualified leads, sales qualified leads. Here is the number of subscriptions purchased or digital downloads purchased, whatever, however it is you make money. If you're a digital publisher who makes money on ads, you want to see ad traffic from your uh from from advertising that banner clicks uh that are differentiated by user agent, so you understand which ads are getting clicks from machines and which ads are getting clicks from humans. And from that analysis, you can then make those decisions like should we block AI traffic? Should we use a system like Cloudflare's uh toll booth? Right? They have a the whole thing where you can send uh an AI agent a request for a payment, and if it doesn't pay, then it gets served a denial notice. It gets interrogated. So it's a pretty clever system that Cloudflare has come up with, and a lot of folks are paying very careful attention to it because of how smart it is. That's what you would want to consider next as a publisher. So you need to have good analytic software. Your analytics software has to be set up and configured well to track the conversions you care about, the economic outcomes you care about, the um the user agents of all the AI bots. Uh and a system like Cloudflare will actually, and by the way, I don't have a paid relationship with Cloudflare. In fact, it's kind of the opposite. Uh I pay Cloudflare, but they have a GraphQL API that allows you to connect to their AI tracking data and then import that data into the database of your choice. You would take that data and then you would pass it to your data analysis facility, whatever system you use for data analysis, and you would have it do the analysis and say, here's what the AI bot traffic is generating in terms of resource consumption on our website. Here's the number of page visits from AI versus humans, here is the number of prospects or uh market qualified leads, sales qualified leads, all the way down to Did somebody spend money with us? And if you feed it that data, you will be able to come up with an answer about what AI is doing for you versus what it's doing to you, and then based on that, come up with an answer for your leadership to say this is this is how we should approach the AI problem of you know our audience being 20 to 1 robots. That by the way is where Trust Insights is right now. When we look at our own data, for every human visitor we get to our website, we get 20 machines. And so one of the biggest challenges we have as marketers is to say, think about the old adage, go where the audience is. Well, if the audience is machines, are we marketing to the audience? Really, really, really, really big tough question there. But that's how I would approach your question about measuring stuff. You have to do uplift modeling. The good news is AI is superb at doing that kind of modeling. And you can do it. And then once you do it, you will be able to get the answers you need to make decisions about how you should treat AI traffic and whether you should be charging bots a toll to come visit you.
