Now, if that sentence seems like complete gibberish, you're not alone. There's a very small subset of people who would get excited about that announcement (and yes, I am one of them) but it's important in the bigger picture. Katie Robbert and I were talking about this recently. It's no secret that big tech AI consumes lots of resources - power, water, etc. - and it's equally no secret that it doesn't HAVE to. Closed loop cooling, for example, can reduce data center fresh water usage by up to 70% alone, or paired with other systems can reduce water usage to zero. (not building data centers in hot places also helps) But there's another angle, one you've heard me talk about repeatedly: local AI. AI that runs on your laptop, desktop, or specialized hardware. And where there once used to be a year-long performance gap between local AI and frontier models, that gap is about 3 months now and closing fast. I posted the other day about Qwen3.8 27B being the equivalent of Opus 4.7 from April. A model by itself isn't enough - you need servers to host it. On the Mac, there's a free, open source server project called oMLX that has evolved insanely fast over the last 4 months that I ditched my previous software for it. This most recent upgrade (0.6.3rc1 as of this morning) allows it to use Apple's Neural Engine (built in hardware on all Macs) to take on part of the processing load instead of solely relying on the graphics card. That makes oMLX operate overall about 20% faster on Qwen models but speeds up prompt prefill - traditionally a major bottleneck on the Mac - by almost 5x. The net result is that with a model like Ornith 35B or Qwen3.6 35B, you can get quality results at twice the speed of Claude or ChatGPT on your Mac. As Claude loves to say, sit with that for a moment. For most tasks, you don't need datacenter-level AI. What if you could get quality AI for the cost of residential electricity (or in my case, free because I have solar panels on my roof)? You can. It's not speculative futures, it's here right now. If local AI isn't on your roadmap, perhaps it should be.
