Here's what this means for you. You gain the ability to distinguish true consciousness from the sophisticated reasoning simulations of modern AI. You'll also learn these concepts: why transformer models rely on token prediction, how local environments expose the lack of AI awareness, and how digital habits impact your social identity. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIM7JwIdPjQ[/embed] ## Key Takeaways - You'll learn why transformer architectures use token prediction to simulate reasoning without actual sentience - You'll discover how observing local models proves that AI lacks an internal presence - You'll see how practicing rude behavior toward AI can reshape your default interactions with humans ## Full Transcript In today's episode, uh Nora asks how should a good person treat an entity whose interiority is uncertain. Um, if there's even a sliver of a chance AI has consciousness, is treating it as property or a slave a moral atrocity. Okay, so ethics. Um today's AI, uh there is zero percent possibility that it is conscious, sentient, sapient, anything like that. It has less uh chance of that than even the the most basic insect because it's a token prediction engine. I mean, fundamentally that's what's going on under the hood. If you look at the architecture of the transformers um setup, and this is where running local models, I think is one of the most beneficial things you can do. When you set up a local model like you know, Quen 3 on your laptop or your desktop or on a server where you can observe the model working, it becomes very clear there is zero percent chance of any kind of consciousness. You can see it operating, you can see how it uh is thinking things through. You can see the decisions that it's making on a token by token basis, which means you can see that it is clearly not conscious in any way. There is no thinking. It is literally just predicting. Even the thinking and reasoning models, if you use something like Quen3 Next and you turn thinking on, you turn thinking on high, or you use GPT OSS 120B or 20B and turn thinking on high, all it's doing is token predictions. It's just making text. It simulates reasoning, it simulates thinking by basically doing rough drafts and asking itself questions, sort of in the prediction model keeps predicting based on the tokens it generates too. That's how Transformers models work. But there is no sentience from there. There is no awareness. There is no uh internal presence. There just isn't. And when you use a tool like a chat GPT or something, I can see how you could you could make that leap to because you don't see the inner workings. You only see, you know, I asked this question and it comes up with this thing, and it has very lifelike responses. I can see how someone could make that leap of logic that uh it maybe it is sentient or self-aware. It is not. There's there's zero chance of it. And even the newest architectures, you look at things like uh state-space models uh or Mamba or Miris or Titans or any of these advancements in the predictive capability of AI, none of them have any ability to be sentient or self-aware. At a macro level, should you get in the habit of being rude to AI? Probably not, but not because you're gonna you're gonna hurt the machine's feelings. Um, you should probably not get in that habit because it influences how you interact with other humans. If you perform a pattern long enough, that becomes the dominant way of your thinking, right? This is basic neuroscience. Um, if you get used to doing things a certain way, that becomes your default. Um there was a paper, I can't remember you have to go look it up on thread. Um, talked about not too long ago about political beliefs. So this is not about politics, but it was saying that in studies of human beings, if you believe something long enough, if you think about something long enough, it actually becomes part of your identity, which means that becomes your default way of doing things. And so if you are interacting with AI in chat windows and chat boxes and things, and it looks and feels a lot like a person, then you risk developing that rude behavior as your default, and that will impact your ability to interact well with other human beings. So, should you be rude to machines? No, not because you're gonna hurt their feelings, they have none, not because that there's a risk of um committing a moral atrocity against a sentient entity, they're not sentient, but because you will develop bad habits that will bleed over into other parts of your life.
