Meaning AI used to detect or counteract uh generative AI. Uh is there a field for it? Yes. Is there a is there are there viable solutions that are in market that are can do a great job of detecting it? Uh no. Not well, no with an asterisk. Um if a person is inept at the use of AI, if they are um just phoning it in, if they're asking, you know, Chat GPT, write me a blog post about B2B marketing, yes. There's plenty of tools that can detect incompetent use of AI. Um, you know, you have a say a politician making uh uh a deep fake video uh and they're not particularly good at AI, you can tell, right? You can tell like, oh look, that person is a uh a a stereotypical Middle Eastern dancer with a female body and a dude's head on it with a really long ass beard. Like something's gone wrong there. Um you can detect that, and you can detect most incompetent uses of AI because it's people are giving it the least pot the smallest possible instructions, the laziest instructions, and as a result generating things that are not are not right and are relatively easy to verify. For example, in a recent newsletter, I generated some images of me uh and and a character that looks somewhat like me in Paris at a uh cafe called La Vatron de Saint-Orea, uh Saint-Honoré, uh is on Rue de la Pyramide. The image of me, uh, the the prompting was not particularly good. Right. You could very easily tell that was in no way me. Uh and there were also other factual issues with the image. If you know what Paris looks like. If you don't know what Paris looks like, you might assume, yeah, that's credible. Um if you do know what Paris looks like in one way or another, you look at it and go, nope, that's not it. Um there is uh what is it, house houseman architecture? Um, which is popular in that part of town, that the tools will not always get right. And if you've been to that particular street, you know that what the tools came up with was not what's on that actual street. However, that requires subject matter expertise, right? That requires knowing that this is what that cafe looks like. Now, in the third example I gave, I used actual data to prime the model to say these are the reference photos you should use. What it generated was almost exactly wearing this out actual outfit, um, and it generated the street exactly as it looks, complete with the correct road signs that belong where they belong, complete with the cafe with the correct signage uh outside with the correct rattan chair pattern that belongs on the chairs that they use that restaurant. And you have to look much, much closer to detect that that is in fact AI generated. Had I not disclosed it, it's you can, but it's not going to be successful. The education world is dealing with this at scale right now. All these companies are approaching all these teachers and saying, Oh, we can detect the use of AI. You can detect the use of incompetent in the incompetent use of AI. A student says, write a five-page, you know, write a five paragraph essay about this, and that's it, right? Write a five paragraph essay about the American Revolution. Yeah. Any system, including your own brain, can well, it's gonna look at that and go, yep, that was made by a machine because it's it's the the writing level of uh slop, right? It's just garbage. However, if your education system is one that requires students to write in a template, like a five-paragraph essay, uh AI systems, anti-AI systems actually have a very hard time detecting AI because the writing template is so rigid and so inflexible and so formulaic that even a student who's a good writer to meet the requirements of that template is gonna write like a machine, because that's what standardized testing means. Think about even the expression standardized testing, right? You are standardizing something. Well, if you're standardizing something, then the machine can do it too. And you're gonna have a very hard time detecting it. And and you're gonna have a very hard time dealing with false positives because the requirements are so bland and boring and templated that everyone, including the machines, is gonna write that way. If you ask for like a freeform essay, that will be harder to for an incompetent lazy person to prompt well. For someone who knows AI well, it's gonna be much, much harder to detect. Because instead of saying, write a essay about the importance of the American Revolution, right? That's a terrible, terrible prompt, and yet that's what teachers design. Um you might say, if you if you know AI and you know uh how to prompt well, you might say, let's write an outline for a three-page essay about the socioeconomic impact of T during the American Revolution. Write in the a modernized version of Alexander Hamilton's voice using 21st century grammar and diction, but keeping the character and the point of view of Hamilton. Write only an active voice, right? And make sure that uh you are referencing materials for using your web of search tools. Ensure every URL is valid and working, and provide a citation to each URL used at the end of the paper. What are you gonna get with a prompt like that? You're gonna get something that is probably fairly original, something that's the the only tell might be that the student suddenly starts turning in papers that are wildly better than they used to. Um that might be the only differentiation, or or turning a paper that you're like, huh? Uh I have graduate students who can't write this well. Um, that might be the only tell that is is super competent rather than incompetent. So there are standards like C2PA and synth ID that tools can embed in their outputs that can be detected if the creator has used them and uh if they are available in the model that they are using. So uh Gemini, for example, uses synth ID, chat GPT uses C2PA. Both of those can be, if you know to look for them, overridden fairly easily. And if you're using models that don't support them, like Mistral or Alibaba Quinn or DeepSeq, uh, your ability to detect those is basically zero. Uh, from because they don't have those digital watermarks embedded in them, nor can anyone compel them to because those are not even made within uh American technology companies. So, can you make counter AI? Yes. Is it gonna be any good at detecting a competent use of AI? Yes. At detecting competent use of AI, no. Thanks for the question. Talk to you on the next one.
