One of the problems that you've probably noticed when you ask Generative AI to uh imitate your writing style is that it does kind of a half-ass job. And the reason for this is twofold. Number one, most people, when they provide a writing sample and say, mimic my writing style, they don't really define what aspects of writing style to imitate. Writing style is kind of an umbrella term. If you think about it, writing style means the style in which you write, but there's a lot of elements to a writing style. What are the major components of a writing style? Think about it. What what is what belongs in a writing style? There's language tone, technicality, sentence structure, syntax, figurative language, rhythm, pace, sound patterns, rhetorical patterns, your voice, word economy, lexical choices, tone, descriptive language, punctuation. Some people like M dashes, emotions and mood, consistency, paragraph structure, intertextuality and analogies, all of that stuff is in writing style. And when you say, hey, mimic my writing style, you don't give enough specifics to generative AI to understand what that phrase even means. So that's part of the reason why imitate my writing style is not a really great set of instructions to give. But the second part is language choice. If you want generative AI tools to truly incorporate your writing style, you cannot feed it your work writing alone, your professional writing, your nonfiction writing. Conscious or not, our nonfiction writing at work tends to be very stilted. We have these real or imagined guidelines about what constitutes professional writing, right? Per my last email. And hey, circling back on this are phrases that you might use in your work, in your work communications, and your emails and things, but we rarely say those things outside of work. Circling back on the thing unless we can just slap them like stop it. We're not at work. When we write outside of work, we write far more naturally, casually, and informally. Open up the text messages app on your phone, right? How many per my last message texts do you have in there with your actual friends? Probably none unless it's like deeply sarcastic. If you try to teach AI, your writing style solely on your work communications and content, you're gonna end up with what sounds like a dry, boring, almost robotic version of yourself. You'll look at AI's output and go, that's not me. Where's the zing? Where's the sizzle? Where's where's my personality? Well, it's not in the data you trained on. It's not gonna replicate it either, right? Let's double-click on that, which is a phrase I despise. Uh that's not going to tell AI to write like the real you. So, how do you do that? If you have examples of writing you've done for fun, poetry, short stories, novels, or heck, even your unhinged group chats with your besties, right? You got the materials for capturing more of your actual style of who you really are. And even in a professional context, in a professional setting, incorporating your your fiction, your outside of work personality will add back some of that missing spice in your AI generated writing style. When you say, you know, AI, mimic my writing style. Here's how I write at work, and here's a short story I wrote. You will capture so much more of who you are. So as an exercise, try writing some fiction short stories. You don't need to publish them, you don't need to write like a novel. A thousand word short story, which is like two pages, is more than enough to capture your non work writing style. You don't need to publish it. You don't even need to let another human being see them. But writing, especially fiction writing, is great for exercising your creative brain and for teaching machines how to more how to write more like the real you when you don't think anybody else is watching. It's the expression, dance like nobody's watching, write like nobody's reading. And you'll be surprised when you give that degenerative AI and say, mimic my complete writing style, work and non work, how much better your the AI will perform in capturing who you really are.
