love this article!! every time i call the phone company or bank and don't get a human being on the phone it pisses me off-they are most decidedly not helpful. This inspires me to put more tools online for my music students- performance videos, top-ten lists, how to tune a banjo, etc. Thanks again, Chris! you totally rock!

Thanks for being HELPFUL by sharing your thoughts and perspective on marketing/communications. As the director of public relations for the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, we teach thousands of young people, "to help other people at all times," one of three planks in the Scout Oath.
It's kind of sad that the principle of helping others needs to be dusted off. But "trustworthy" is the first point of the Scout Law and "Trust Agents" is on my reading list.
Keep up the great work!

In Edgar H. Schein words: "the important discovery I have made is that the need to help is precisely what gets us into trouble often because we help prematurely or we overhelp or we second guess what might be needed and give the wrong kind of help. The trick seems to be how to find out what is actually needed before we jump in".

Read about helping on Ed Schein new book: "Helping: How to Offer, Give, and Receive Help" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/157675863X/ref...

"Sooner or later, every one of your qualified prospects WILL do business with you. But you don't have to wait until money changes hands to start providing value!" - Jay Abraham taught me this many years ago, and they are words to live by.

Dr.Mani
Author of 'Think, Write & Retire'
www.ThinkWriteRetire.com

So true. Too many businesses see being helpful as not generating anything - "we don't get anything for it".

Most people remember two things, good service and bad service. Any business that will help you is remembered and talked about because it has sadly become such a rarity.
