In some ways, maybe this did work that way- we need more feedback. One of the things I thought of is that the architecture of the space is also important- to encourage interactions and that sense of family, you need group discussion, hang out space- what I call the power of coffee and donuts- the natural way to encourage people to meet up and chat.
